One of the most important foundations for a painting is
to create accurate values.
This can happen right from the start, with a monochromatic underpainting
that shows the correct values
From top left,
I’ve started adding a transparent Burnt Umber wash
over my support.
At top right, I’ve begun to form the general values.
In the lower picture, I’ve used a rag to subtract paint, lightening the areas that will be the lightest values.
After subtracting in the lighter value areas, and darkening the values that must remain darker, my under painting is complete.
I’m most concerned about values at this stage – I want the under structure to be composed where values link together.
Now I may begin to paint with local color and the under painting will help guide me toward the correct values in the color layers. Slowly, the landscape painting will continue to emerge.
