What does the term Thin Places bring to mind? I have to admit, it’s not a term I’ve been all that familiar with, but one that I’ve come to appreciate.
Celtic Christianity has (this) term to refer to those moments when the separation between this world and heaven becomes so minimal that we sense the presence of God. (Bill Tinsley)
Perhaps our first thought of thin places is a little mystical, but I’m coming to an understanding that this may well be a place that the arts occupy. Have you ever felt it ~ your heart seems to soar a little bit when beholding beauty? A beautiful piece of music, a lovely painting that holds your gaze, a poem or literary work that resonates in a deep and profound way. Even if just for a few moments, there’s a whiff of wonder… the Presence of God has left an aroma that is a bit indescribable.
Have I stirred your imagination? As an artist, I’m excited to think that perhaps we are being invited into this way of the arts where God gives a glimpse of Himself in this world. And, we are invited to participate through following the design He has purposely given us to step into the good works He has planned and knows we are perfectly suited for. These thought fortify my sense of purpose in what I’m called to do, which is what I need at the start of a new year!
What does this mean to you? If you are creative at heart, you are being invited – not only to experience a thin place through your art (whatever your medium or genre), but also to provide a way for others to experience a thin place and catch a glimpse of God’s presence!
I hope this is a huge encouragement to you to press on!
