It happens! In fact, it’s not that uncommon!
The creative “well” seems to run a little dry. You’ve probably felt it, too. And, in some ways, it’s not a bad thing…. life, in general, has its ebbs and flows. So, I think you could say, it’s expected.
But, in those times of ebb, there are things we can do ~ fun things ~ to reignite. These are actually part of healthy creative habits which encourage and fuel creative growth.
So, get out your sketchbook!
Let’s play. Record ideas and thoughts. Make a few notes.
(But even that can sound a little daunting when you feel completely uninspired!)
So, here are some ways to “play” that aren’t daunting!
Take your sketchbook along and make some time to:
SEE ART
See it in person, see it online.
Make some quick sketches. Write a few notes. Let some ideas begin to germinate.
What do you like?
colors….subjects…techniques…|
What intrigues you and what questions come to mind?
These things are a place where new ideas can begin!
Look at your old sketchbooks! Surprisingly, old ideas and thoughts can take on new life!
BE IN NATURE
spend some time absorbing.
watch….listen…question…
Make a few notes about what you notice and how you feel.
These are ideas that need to percolate and will find their way into your creative work.
TAKE A COURSE!
There’s something rejuvenating about learning a new method or process or a new way of thinking about something you already know. New ideas are generated and built upon old ideas. And there’s something very valuable in the encouragement from others.
And finally ~ this may take you by surprise…
ASK
Ask for ideas, inspiration and encouragement!
I believe we are created “imago dei” or in God’s image.
Creativity is certainly foundational to His character.
I’m reminded of the scripture, “if you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you” (James 1:5)
Can this be applied to asking for inspiration? I know it can! I’ve done this and when I’m quiet to listen and discern, new ideas arrive.
Maybe to sum all this up….
Persist. Be engaged
So, what I’ve found in the predictable ebb and flow of creative expression is that new and interesting inspirations are waiting in the wings. And there are practical things we can do to help them sprout and grow. That encourages me in the midst of an ebb! I hope it encourages you too!
Leave a comment! How do you reignite your creativity when it ebbs?
