How to Hang a Solo Exhibit in a Local Venue

Original Art is always better seen in person!

You are invited!
From December 2 – 29th,
Vibrant Landscape Painting Exhibit

Visitors can see these colorful, vibrant landscape paintings at
Indian Prairie Library – 401 Plainfield Rd., Darien, IL

Hanging an exhibit is satisfying, but also requires pre-planning and pre-organization.  Before anything, measure the space for the work and make a note of the color of the wall that the work will be exhibited on.  Choosing the art and how it will exhibit together is next. Do the paintings tell a story together?  Do the colors work from one painting to the next.  Also, is the size of each something that works together?

Framing and preparing each painting for hanging is next.  I make a “wall map” on graph paper.  For the size of the space – which paintings work well together within the space.  How will they be spaced?  This is a great time saver when actually hanging the exhibit.  I even measure how much space I want to leave between the paintings.

Always take a small level to use as you hang. And check with the venue to see what their rules are for what can be stuck to the wall and what they allow for adhesion.  In fact, I’ve created a small “tool box” with a level, artist’s tape, scissors, etc.

Create title plates for each painting. My cards include the title, my name, and the size of the painting. I also include a QR code for each painting on its title plate that takes the inquiry directly to the webpage for that painting.  An artist’s statement is also part of the exhibit.  I include 2 QR codes for this – one to my website homepage, and one to a landing page for my email list.  And don’t forget to have business cards available!

I’ve found it very helpful to take a photograph of each part of the exhibit.  Sometimes, you see with the camera’s eye something that your eye may have overlooked.  And, I also like to take a video as well.

The more pre-planned and organized before the exhibit is hung, the easier and quicker the actual process will be!
