Refreshing the Artistic Spirit

Cultivating Wonder

As I write today, spring is in the air! There’s the song of birds, a warmer sunny day, and the miracle of green shoots beginning to appear. In our busy, distracted world it’s so easy to run right past this feast for the senses…but, this is where God so often shows up. Connecting our senses to the natural world is where wonder unfolds.  What a gift!

It’s so important ~ the connection between living in wonder and what that means to the creative process.

But it isn’t easy; it’s something we must pursue. It takes a slow observing eye, without an agenda or hurried schedule to follow.

The 21st century world we inhabit does not make much room for such a priority or pace. Perhaps this is a reason we now find ourselves collectively in an epidemic of societal anxiety. The need for peace, healing, hope and renewal has never been more urgent according to recent news reports.

Here’s something beautiful, though, the art that we create has the power to bring relief to the thirsty soul.

My point is this ~ have you ever noticed that God rarely reveals Himself suddenly or quickly and that most often He is soft spoken? As we take time to experience beauty, the wonder that unfolds in the unhurried observation of God’s fingerprints in nature seeps into our own souls and into our artistic creations. This peace and quieting that settles within us touches the lives of others. It happens in the art we create, in our words, and in just being present. That’s a healing touch; one that we need and one that we give through what we’ve received.

Have you ever really considered that your art fills a deep need in this world? Let’s take time in this season of beautiful renewal to quiet ourselves and  to watch for the wondrous. The world is so in need of the sense of wonder we create.
