I love the definition of wonder!
“a feeling of surprise which is mixed with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar or unexplained”
Aren’t moments of wonder — well, wonderful!?
For the human spirit to be in a state of wonder is a sign of being fully alive! It causes us to imagine, to question, to enjoy, to discover… It certainly inspires a sense of joy! Our hearts are opened to an awareness of God’s presence and wonder elevates the creativity that we possess.
How do we cultivate wonder in our artistic lives?
This is an important question, because when we lose wonder (as it is so easy to do in our busy lives), we lose that spark that gives creative expression excitement and life.
Here are some easy suggestions to rekindle childlike wonder:
- Unplug from distractions ~ your undivided presence in the moment is needed!
- Look for the small, common things to notice and appreciate (nature has a bounty of things we easily take for granted)
- Stop and breathe… intentionally allow art to speak to the soul – really listen to beautiful music, look deeply at a work of art, spend time with poetry and literature
- Absorb nature – listen to the sounds and rhythms, observe, smell, touch
- Learn something new and different – a new place, a new skill, a new culture inspires wonder
Wonder Occurs in Discovery
As an artist on an artistic journey, the role of wonder is irreplaceable.
It must be cultivated.
We must be intentional!
We give ourselves the gift of joy and our creative work takes flight in new ways.
