As artists, we are on a path… no matter what kind of art we do. We are created to give expression and voice to our thoughts creatively, and this is part of the process; finding our own distinctive voice. There are observable stepping stones – I see them in my own path. And, every step is important and necessary as we move into our creative selves.
We begin with interest… interest in subjects, interest in mediums, interest in the elements of an art form. We find that certain things draw us in and hold our attention and call us back. Though these interests can deepen and alter some over time – the chances are good that those interests are rather constant.
Another step in development is understanding by copying. That’s right – copying another artist. It’s an important early step. We may copy a style, we may duplicate color combinations. We may even copy an entire work. There is so much to be learned in that process. But copying another doesn’t give rise to our own particular voice. We have to keep moving.
We take our understanding further still as we play with and rearrange elements. New thoughts are forming. We are asking ourselves questions about what we are doing and how we are doing it. We may add in new elements and ideas. This is another layer of development that’s vital to growth. And finally, we begin to notice – notice elements that are showing up again and again. Subjects that continue to call us back. This is where we begin to see our personal voice making itself known.
Where are you on this winding road?
There’s no fast track… the process of becoming is slow and steady, unfolding over time. In fact, I believe it is a never-finished endeavor, because we ourselves are never finished! It’s exciting, really! We push ourselves into new growth on this winding road by taking a chance – trying something new instead of safely creating – by making mistakes and figuring out what to do with a mistake – by taking time to look and evaluate – and creating more – pushing the boundaries a bit and confronting fears.
So where are you on this winding road? I’ve been looking at where I am – and I see how sometimes I’ve needed to back up and retrace steps with new ideas. We are all becoming! But, don’t you think that’s exciting? The secret to growth is in continuing the process, learning as we go! Let’s push the boundaries a little bit and see where it leads! That’s growth!
